Our volunteers work closely with the Board of Directors and the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Staff.
The Board of Directors leads FoSANA by approving activities, setting budgets, and determining the direction of the organization each year. The board meets once a month.
Members at large are typically those volunteering on committees or wishing to help direct the organization.
Committees meet as they determine necessary and provide updates to the board of directors monthly.
This committee assists the board by identifying fundraising opportunities and grants. They work closely with the other committees to develop projects and events. They also assist with applying for funds from other organizations and writing grant proposals.
This committee assists with writing grant proposals and overseeing special projects in the Natural Areas. This committee works directly with San Antonio Parks and Recreation staff to ensure projects meet city requirements.
This committee assists with communications, such as, newsletters, promotions, social media, and donation/sponsor recognition. They also work to organize member meetings and events, fundraisers, and social events.
This committee helps identify volunteer opportunities, updates the schedule of volunteer events, and assists in answering questions for potential volunteers.
These volunteers set up a FoSANA table or poster at a trailhead. They share information about the natural areas, trails, flora and fauna, park rules and safety, and FoSANA. Due to park rules, they wait to be approached and refrain from approaching park patrons.
The San Antonio Natural Areas offer a variety of volunteer opportunities. These opportunities are eligible for Master Naturalist volunteer hours. These opportunities require a background check and volunteer liability waiver to be on file with the City of San Antonio.
These volunteers support the Nature Preserve Officers and park staff with a range of maintenance activities, including trail and garden maintenance, planting native species, removing invasive species, site restoration, and general infrastructure maintenance.
Previous special projects have included developing and installing plant identification signage, constructing bird blinds and bat houses, and assembling water catchment systems.
The park naturalists conduct scientific research and develop plans for the parks based on those surveys and the monitoring conducted. This may include reviewing camera photos or footage, conducting bird counts, identifying plants or animals, collecting seeds, or developing reports or science-based management plans.
The natural areas’ education coordinators provide education programs for both children and adults. This diverse assortment of programs includes art, science, nature walks, animal and plant identification hikes, information about Texas native species, and basic outdoor skills. Volunteers may lead walks/hikes, read books to children, develop or participate in art/crafts programs, develop animal or plant guides, design games like scavenger hunts, or create educational videos.
